A fire occurred around 1 a.m. Feb. 7 in North Balch Hall at Cornell University.
According to a press release by the Ithaca Fire Department, the fire started on the third floor of Balch Hall and was contained to one dorm room. Heavy smoke spread to the fourth and fifth floors. Cornell Life Safety was first on the scene.
The building was evacuated and residents were relocated to the Court-Kay-Bauer Dorms.
Tompkins County Emergency Dispatch reported one person who inhaled smoke is being treated by Cornell University Emergency Medical Service and Bangs Ambulance. The dispatch also reported a female resident was complaining of dizziness after inhaling smoke.
After the fire was extinguished, the fire chief requested a fire arson investigator come to the scene. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
