This is the week I have been putting off since I started this blog. Vegetarian week. I am a meat lover, but being a vegetarian is one of the most sustainable things you can do in your life. So for this week I will be vegetarian. I know the dining hall offers plenty of alternatives for vegetarians, since it is a pretty common life style choice on this campus.
So I’ll give updates on how I’m doing in the middle of the week too, since it might not be as easy of a change as every other tip before.
But why is being vegetarian so sustainable?
Raising animals for food is one of the leading causes of pollution and resource depletion today. Becoming vegetarian helps protect the natural environment. Not only does animal waste pollute our air and water, but the massive amounts of animals bred for food also deplete our resources. It is several times more effective to eat grains directly rather than to funnel them through farmed animals. So not only are animals’ lives saved and protected through vegetarianism, but the environment is also protected.
