The men’s outdoor track and field team put in a strong showing against national competition Thursday and Friday at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Penn. The Bombers competed in one event Thursday and six on Friday at the meet, held at University of Pennsylvania’s Franklin Field.
In the team’s opening event, graduate student William Way finished 20th in the 5,000-meter run, clocking in at 14:53.48. On Friday, junior Dan Moloney finished 56th in the 400-meter hurdles, posting an Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference qualifying time of 56.52 seconds. In the same event, sophomore Ian Tapler finished in 58.67 seconds, good for 59th.
In addition to Moloney, the Blue and Gold posted two other ECAC-qualifying times Friday. The Bombers finished 62nd in the heats for the 4×100-meter relay, which was not quite good enough to move on to the finals, but still qualified them for ECACs. Sophomore Brian Maley, sophomore Chris Mastrosimone, and senior co-captains Max Orenstein and Kyle Devins finished the event in 43.39 seconds.
The Bombers also failed to make it out of heats, but still qualified for ECACs in the 4×400-meter relay, where freshman Brennan Edmonds, Mastrosimone, sophomore Julian Orenstein and senior co-captain Jeff Wetmore finished 41st in 3:19.75.
Rounding out the meet for Ithaca, Devins finished 15th out of 25 athletes in the long jump with a mark of 6.78 meters.
The Bombers return to action at 10 a.m. today when they compete in the Big Red Invitational at Cornell University.
