The women’s tennis team played its first ever match at Glazer Arena, located inside the Athletic and Event Center, today against Elmira College. The Bombers defeated the Soaring Eagles by a score of 9-0.

Junior Allison Young had victories in both singles and doubles play. In her singles match she earned a 6-0, 6-1 win. In doubles she teamed up with sophomore Becky Guzzo to win the first set 8-4 and the final two 6-1.

Young said the victory made her feel like the time she put in to her offseason workouts was worth it.

“My performance today was a good reflection of how hard I worked on and off the court this past summer,” she said. “Being moved up from 5 singles last year is not an easy transition, but I believe that my hard work paid off and it was evident in how well I played tonight.”

Young said the match today was a great warmup and introduction to the season.

“We were able to experiment with the lineup and doubles teams, and as a team we recognized what we need to work on as well as what we did well,” she said.

Senior captain Kelsey Harness, who won her match in fifth singles 6-0, 6-2, said the team started the season on a positive note.

“Overall I think we got off to a pretty good start this season,” Harness said. “It felt good to be out there playing a real match again.”

Junior Laurel Salladay won her match in fourth singles and said she was pleased with the team’s performance.

“We have a long season ahead, but tonight was a great starting point to build on,” she said. “ I feel great about the team’s performance everyone played well, even while some of us tried to get used to playing with new doubles partners.”

Young said the Bombers can improve on communicating more effectively.

“I think we need to work on verbal communication on the court and getting to know one another,” she said. “Knowing your partner is critical in doubles.”

The Bombers will compete at the Mary Hosking Invitational this weekend at William Smith College.
