Despite the never-ending rain, flooding and wet conditions, the Bombers shut out Marywood University 7-0 in their home opener at Carp Wood Field yesterday.

The team got on the scoreboard early, as sophomore forward Ellyn-Grant Keane scored her second goal of the season off an assist from junior forward Rachael Palladino in the second minute to put the Bombers up 1-0. Junior midfielder Julie Winn exploded in the first half, scoring two goals to lead the team into halftime with a 4-0 lead.

Winn said that the weather helped her play better because it made her concentrate and focus more than usual.

“I focused more on my touches and passing as a result of the rain, which helped me to step up my game,” she said.

Five different players got in on the scoring action, including Amanda Callanan, who also tallied two goals. Sophomore forward Jackie Rodabaugh, who scored in the 81st minute, said she was pleased with the way the team approached the game.

“Because it was our first home game, everyone was really focused and excited,” Rodabaugh said. “The rain caused a bit of frustration, but i think we handled it well.”

Head Coach Mindy Quigg said she was proud of her players for fighting through the elements, but expected nothing less from her team.

“Effort is never an issue with this team,” she said.

The Bombers will look for their third win in four games when they face Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Carp Wood Field.
