Pioneering political blogger and author John Nichols will visit Ithaca College today to educate students on the significance of the U.S. Constitution, particularly the First Amendment, in his speech, “First Amendment Remedies: The Constitution as a Call to Action,” in celebration of Constitution Day.
Constitution Day is a national, annual observance to commemorate the September 1787 signing of the Constitution. According to the U.S. Department of Education, any schools receiving government funding must celebrate Constitution Day in some way.
The event, which is free and open to the public, will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Textor Hall 102.
Alyssa Figueroa, a representative for the IC Labor Initiative in Promoting Solidarity, said Nichols will address issues pertaining to the Constitution and will encourage students to be more proactive as citizens.
“We chose to bring John Nichols in because he is an advocate in challenging the concept of corporate personhood,” she said. “It’s important for college students to critique issues as the world becomes more corporate.”
