The volleyball team split its games for the second consecutive day of the Empire 8 crossover on Sunday, defeating Utica College and falling to host Elmira College.
The Bombers defeated the Pioneers in straight sets in the first match, winning the final two sets by double digit margins. Senior middle blocker Kate Thoene and senior outside hitter Jessica Hoeffner led the Blue and Gold’s offensive assault with 14 and 11 kills, respectively. Junior setter Marissa Woodcome had 36 assists and senior outside hitter Chelsea Hayes added four aces.
The South Hill squad struggled from the beginning against Elmira College, dropping the first six points of the match en route to dropping the first set 25-18. The Bombers bounced back to take the second set, but the Soaring Eagles took the final two sets to take the match 3-1.
Hoeffner led the Bombers with 11 kills and sophomore libero Nicki Readie led the defense with 18 digs.
The Blue and Gold return to action Friday at Franklin & Marshall College’s Scramble Tournament in Lancaster, Pa.
