Planned Parenthood will mark its 95th anniversary Oct. 15, and I want to wish the organization success for many years to come.

Planned Parenthood is especially important for college students and youth because of the excellent health services and education it provides. Whenever I have a reproductive health concern or question, I can rely on the organization for expert and non-judgmental care. I can trust it to give me reliable, unbiased information and to let me decide what is best for me. And even if I didn’t have insurance or other means to pay for it, I could get this quality of care.

Some politicians and their allies want to destroy Planned Parenthood because the organization defends a woman’s right to choose when and whether she becomes a mother. They don’t care about the fact that one in five women has visited Planned Parenthood at some point in her life for birth control, cancer screening, testing and treatment for sexually transmitted disease, or other preventive services. These services account for more than 90 percent of what the organization does. Politicians also don’t care about the fact that Planned Parenthood does more to prevent unintended pregnancy than any other health care provider in the country. But I do care. That is why, as it commemorates 95 years of service, I stand with Planned Parenthood.
