This is a very special edition of Song of the Week. Two years ago, I interviewed Jon Kagan who was a senior at Ithaca College. Kagan is a rapper who goes by the stage name Cosmo and he helped me understand how he was getting his music out to the masses through online distributors.
That same year, Kagan released his full-length album as a sort of personal capstone for his college career. The album featured a host of guest collaborators and focused on the fusion of hip-hop samplings and synthetic elements.
Since releasing his album, Kagan has been remixing songs from artists such as Jay-Z, CunninLynguists, Tupac and Eminem. His latest remix, which was just released today, is one for Talib Kweli’s “Get By.” Kagan combines a futuristic synthesizer line which bounces around Talib Kweli’s original flow with an out of this world theremin line in the chorus.
