The men’s basketball team fell to 0–3 after failing to win a game at this weekend’s Max Ziel Men’s Basketball Classic at SUNY-Oswego. The Blue and Gold fell to Oswego 74-71 on Friday and were defeated by SUNY Fredonia 75-70 on Saturday.
The Bombers were led by sophomore forward and center Frank Mitchell against the 18th ranked Oswego Lakers, as the Rutgers University transfer scored a career-high 25 points. Mitchell also grabbed seven rebounds to help the Bombers outrebound the Lakers 33-28. Junior forward Andrei Oztemel posted a double-double, dropping 14 points and grabbing a career-high 13 boards.
Junior guard Sean Rossi added nine points while tallying six assists to move into second place on the Blue and Gold’s all-time assists list with 492 in his career.
Oswego led the majority of the game and never trailed after three minutes into the second half.
The South Hill squad once again won the rebound battle in their game against Fredonia, but the 47-36 edge did not provide dividends on the scoreboard. The Bombers tied the game for the 11th time with more than three minutes to play, but could not overcome the Blue Devils in the final minutes.
Oztemel led the Blue and Gold with 22 points in the game and was named to the all-tournament team following the loss. Senior guard Jordan Marcus pitched in 16 points for the Bombers while Mitchell nabbed a career-high 12 rebounds.
Bench points were key in the Blue Devils’ win, as the Fredonia bench outscored the Bombers’ bench by a 44-13 margin.
The Bombers return to action at 1 p.m. Saturday against Lebanon Valley College at the Radisson Carnegie Mellon Invitational in Pittsburgh, Pa.
