Women’s Indoor Track: Bombers take command on first day of state championship meet

The women’s indoor track and field team sits in first place after day one of competition at the New York State Collegiate Track Conference Indoor Championships at Hamilton College. The Bombers first-day total of 101 points leads second-place St. Lawrence University by 47 points.

The South Hill squad won six of the seven events and earned 22 all-NYSCTC performances. The Blue and Gold earned 11 spots in Saturday’s finals.

Freshman Leigh Martino earned a career-best performance of 3,000 points to win the pentathlon. Martino won the 60-meter hurdles in 9.94 seconds and the 800-meter run in 2:22.13 while finishing second in the long jump with a 4.78-meter mark. Junior Julie Schaeffer finished fifth in the pentathlon with 2,559 points and senior Ashley Dlubac followed in sixth with a point total of 2,593. Schaeffer ran second in the high jump with a clear of 1.52 meters and Dlubac won the shot put with a heave of 9.61 meters.

Senior Kate Middleton won the shot put with an ECAC-qualifying heave of 12.13 meters while classmate Emma Dewart won the high jump with ECAC-qualifying clear of 1.68 meters – a jump that tied the Margaret Bundy Scott Fieldhouse record set in 1999. Dewart also claimed the long jump title with an ECAC-qualifying leap of 5.44 meters.

Senior Heidi Baumbach won the 5,000-meter run in 18:22.81 to qualify for the ECAC Indoor Championships. The 4×200-meter relay team of Martino, freshmen Alex Lewis, Rachel Friedman and Harmony Graves won the event in a time of 1:46.51 to qualify for the ECAC’s and set a new Hamilton College fieldhouse record.
