College hosts events to celebrate Black History Month

There are dozens of events being held on campus to celebrate Black History Month.

To celebrate Black History Month, organizations at Ithaca College are hosting events to honor the past and prepare for the future. The following events will take place on campus in celebration of Black history and culture.

Feb. 14

“The Illustration of Bodily Love” by Emily Jimenez

by Café con IDEAS

Noon, Feb. 14 in African-Latino Society Room

Café con IDEAS is hosting several sessions to encourage students to use art to analyze look at their own responsibility toward social change.

 

Feb. 15

Make Love Make Sense

by the Center for Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Social Change

Noon, Feb. 15 in African-Latino Society Room

This event will involve a discussion about the characteristics of successful relationships and evaluating social standards of black love. It will also involve games and a critique of an episode of “Grownish.”

 

Feb. 16

Curls and Coils Demo Day

by Curls and Coils

2 p.m. Feb. 15 in African-Latino Society Room

The demo day will involve demonstrations of different hair styling techniques, including twist outs, wash and go’s and finger coils, on a variety of different hair types.

 

Black History Month Showcase

6:30 p.m. Feb.10 in Emerson Suites

This event will showcase the talent of students of color on campus.

 

Feb. 18

Black History Month Collaborative Art Showcase

by IC Mixed

6 p.m. Feb. 18 in Klingenstein Lounge

The showcase will feature black talent and creativity. Students will express themselves and share their work in mediums like paintings, poetry, song and dance.

 

Feb. 21

Black History Month Concert

8:15 p.m. Feb. 21 Ford Hall

This concert will feature performers, including African Drumming and Dance Ensemble, Worlds of Music Class, the Dorothy Cotton Jubilee singers, and faculty and students from the School of Music.

 

Feb. 25

Box of Self-Love

by Center for IDEAS and co-sponsored by BOLD Scholars

6 p.m. Feb. 25 in African-Latino Society Room

This event will include a creative project in which participants create a box of self-love. The Presenters will give a breakdown about the differences between habit-centered goals and outcome-centered goals.

 

Feb. 27

Discovering Your Story: Black Genealogy

by Nicole Eversley-Bradwell, interim vice president and director of Admission

Noon, Feb. 27  Klingenstein Lounge

This event will include information about how to research black genealogy and hard to find ancestors.

 

Feb. 28

For the Culture: Student Org Mixer

by the Center for IDEAS

6 p.m. Feb. 28 in African-Latino Society Room

This event will serve as a mixer between other race and ethnicity focused organizations at the college.
