The field hockey team pushed its winning streak to four games with a 2–0 win over Houghton College on Oct. 17 to improve its record to 10–3 overall and 6–1 in Empire 8 play.

The Bombers won three straight games against Houghton since 2013. With the win, the South Hill squad has now shut out seven of the 13 teams it has faced this season and has collected three shutouts over the course of the month of October alone.

The Bombers outshot the Highlanders 17–6, with 10 of the Blue and Gold’s shots being on goal, while Houghton had only five shots on goal. The Bombers also held a 12–4 advantage over the Highlanders when it came to penalty corners.

Junior Cassie Schuttrumpf had the first goal of the game at the 14:34 mark, collecting her sixth goal of the season. Junior Colleen Keegan-Twombly registered the assist, her second of the season. Keegan-Twombly and Schuttrumpf switched roles for the second goal scored at the 57:48 mark. The goal was Keegan-Twombly’s 11th of the season, and Schuttrumpf picked up her second assist of the year.

Schuttrumpf finished the game with one goal, one assist and two shots on goal, and Keegan-Twombly finished with one goal, one assist and three shots on goal. Rounding out the Bombers’ offense is junior Lauren Delia, who recorded two shots on goal.

Junior goalkeeper Katie Lass recorded five saves on the day, finishing with a save percentage of 1.00. As of Oct. 15, Lass was ranked third in the nation in save percentage, with a .897 percentage.

The Bombers are back in action at 11 a.m. Oct. 24 at Utica College for the last Empire 8 conference game showdown. With the win against Houghton, the Blue and Gold hold on to their position at second place in the Empire 8 standings.
