Weekly Recap: Women’s track and field sustains solid season at Cornell

The women’s track and field team competed in the Southern Tier Collegiate Open, hosted by Cornell University, on Jan. 8. This was the team’s first meet of 2016.

Junior Katherine Pitman placed runner-up in pole vault, notching a 3.70 meters mark. Teammate senior Alex Rechen finished seventh overall and also met Eastern College Athletic Conference marks with a 3.30 meter finish.

Sophomore Taryn Cordani placed fourth in the 3,000 meter run and was fewer than six seconds behind the first place runner, senior Emma Payne of Harvard University. Cordani completed the race in 10:11.09, while Payne crossed the finish line at 10:05.36.

Junior Brandy Smith, last outdoor season’s Division III National Champion in discus, competed in weight throw for this meet. Smith threw for an ECAC-qualifying 15.72 meters and placed fifth overall in the event.

Sophomore Brooke Bonney of Binghamton University finished atop the podium and met ECAC standards with a distance of 16.66 meters.

Senior Eliza Dewart placed fourth in the 400 meter dash and ninth in the 200 meter dash. She surpassed ECAC marks for both events with times of 59.83 and 26.11, respectively.

Both the men’s and women’s teams competed in the Ithaca Blue & Gold Alumni Track & Field Meet on Jan. 9 held at the Glazer Arena.

Both squads will be on the road for their next meet, as they will compete in the Spartan Regional Preview hosted by The College of Staten Island at 3 p.m. Jan. 15 in Staten Island, New York.
