The men’s and women’s track and field teams continued their success into the second day of competition at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships on May 27 with more athletes placing high ranks.

This comes after juniors Brandy Smith and Katherine Pitman won national titles during the first day of the Championships.

Smith and Pitman competed May 26 in discus and pole vault, respectively. Smith won the national title in back-to-back years with her best attempt of the day at 51.48 meters. Pitman claimed her first national title in her third trip to nationals. With a 4.21 meter vault, Pitman broke her personal record, the college’s record and the national record. Smith and Pitman both earned their second All-American honors for their performances.

Smith, competing in her second event of the championships May 27, tied for 15th in shot put. Her best throw came on her first of three, reaching 12.90 meters.

Senior Andrew Brandt tied for ninth in the high jump event. Brandt’s highest mark on the day was 2.01 meters, which he made on his first attempt. Brandt failed all three attempts at the next mark of 2.04 meters.

Junior Natalie Meyer tied for 13th in high jump. Her best of the day was 1.62 meters on the first attempt. She failed all three of the attempts at 1.66 meters.

Senior Sawyer Hitchcock competed in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. He placed 17th overall in the preliminary round May 26, clocking in at 9:28.58.

In the final day of competition May 28, sophomore Taryn Cordani will be racing in the 5,000-meter run and sophomore Grace Ryan will be competing in the triple jump. She is ranked 23rd in the nation and she qualified after a student-athlete of a higher rank had to withdraw due to medical seasons. This will be Cordani’s third trip to nationals and Ryan’s first.
