Imagine my surprise when I was browsing my Twitter feed and came across this The Talks interview with the Sartorialist, Scott Schuman (I used one of his images in a previous post). I’m always down for a candid fashion blogger interview, but this one was slightly discomforting. Cold, aloof and condescending Schumann reduces adorable teenie-bopper fashion blogger Tavi Gevinson of Style Rookie to being a blogger for “other kids around her age” – even going so far as to say that she can only appreciate “art and stuff in an abstract way.” Here’s a clip from his interview:
Wait a minute, Mr. Schuman. Who made you the elitist, patronizing godfather of “true” fashion blogs? I mean, obviously, the Sartorialist is a much older blog than the Style Rookie, but that doesn’t mean that the content’s any less valuable to fashion enthusiasts. She might be fifteen, but her whimsical style blog is beyond just a precocious novelty act. And what’s wrong with being young? It doesn’t mean that you have any less of an appreciation of style. Plus, Schuman said that he doesn’t really read other fashion blogs besides Garance Doré’s (who also happens to be his girlfriend. Not that I’m holding that against her. I actually love her blog.), so how can he even know whether or not he likes Tavi and the Style Rookie? Scott Schuman may take fabulous street style photographs, but he’s got a lot to learn when it comes to playing nice with other bloggers.
