In a battle for Empire 8 Conference supremacy, St. John Fisher College completed its sweep of the baseball team by winning both games of yesterday’s doubleheader in Rochester, N.Y. The two teams are now tied atop the Empire 8 standings with identical conference records of 7-4. The Blue and Gold are 18—8—1 following their four-game skid.
The Cardinals won the first game by a score of 4-0, as their pitching held the Bomber batters to just two hits, both off which came from senior first baseman Mike Preite. Freshman Jimmy Wagner pitched a complete game for the Blue and Gold, giving up all of the game’s runs in the first inning. He allowed just two hits to the Cardinals for the rest of the game while striking out six batters.
The Bombers held a 4-1 lead going into the eighth inning of Game 2, but St. John Fisher scored four runs in the bottom frame to take the lead. The South Hill Squad rallied in the top of the ninth to tie the game at five runs apiece and send the game to extra innings. Then, in the bottom of the tenth inning, St. John Fisher loaded the bases before sophomore shortstop Chris Roeder got a walk-off RBI single up the middle to seal the win.
The Cardinals outhit the Bombers 9–8 in the victory. Freshman pitcher John Prendergast and senior pitcher Tucker Healy combined to strike out 13 batters on the day. Healy picked up the loss.
The Blue and Gold return to action Wednesday in a non-conference game at SUNY- Oneonta.
