Bear Grylls develops new competition series

Forget surviving the outdoors, let’s see if Bear Grylls can survive NBC programming.

Edward “Bear” Grylls, a popular British outdoorsman and celebrity best known for his television series “Man vs. Wild,” has just landed a new reality series on broadcast television network NBC.

Instead of focusing solely on his personal adventures, this new show — tentatively called “Get Out Alive” — is a competition reality series. “Get Out Alive” will feature competitors in teams of two undergoing extreme survival tests. The show will be co-produced by Bear Grylls Ventures and Electus

NBC has ordered eight episodes of the series and plans to debut it in summer 2013. It will be interesting to see how Grylls’ show fairs for a broadcast audience, as his cult hit “Man Vs. Wild” aired on the Discovery Channel, which has a smaller reach than NBC.

It also remains to be seen if Grylls himself will appear on the show in any capacity. I think that Grylls is a likely host for the series, which makes sense as he is a “survival celebrity,” but one never knows with NBC.
