Grave Wave 201

%image_alt%If you read my Zola Jesus review in this week’s print edition, you may have come across a music genre you’ve never heard of before: grave wave. It’s basically dark techno that still remains danceable. While Zola Jesus is a touch more ambient, there are groups that focus on making some demonic beats to get the zombie masses grooving.

One of these groups is Brooklyn baddies Light Asylum. Frontwoman Shannon Funchess happens to be one of those lead singers where you actually need to research their gender—not that this is a bad thing. In fact, it’s incredibly awesome. Her powerful vocals bring a raw quality to the tracks. Combined with the grinding techno, her voice creates a mesmerizing feeling of doom and deception.
