The Hammond Health Center has seen 21 laboratory-c0nfirmed cases of influenza since Feb. 11, with additional clinically diagnosed cases.

Vivian Lorenzo, physician and medical services director in the Center for Counseling, Health and Wellness at the health center, sent a letter to Ithaca College deans on Feb. 15 recommending they allow students with the flu an excused absence without a written note from the health center. She said affected students may return to work and class after 24 fever-free hours.

Vaccines, which are available free of charge at the health center, take two full weeks to take effect, she said.
