Bombers fall short against Big Red

The softball team fell to Division I Cornell University in a doubleheader today at Kostrinsky Field. The Blue and Gold dropped the first game 13–1 and the second 6–2.

In the opener, the Bombers got on board in the third inning when senior Alyssa Guzman led off with a single. She advanced to second on a ground out and scored on a single from senior Caitlin Ryan, who went 3-for-3 on the game.

Unfortunately for the Bombers’ bats, the runs stopped there.

Senior Alyssa Brook threw a complete game while letting up 10 hits and 13 runs, six of which were unearned. Brook struck out six Big Red hitters.

The Big Red got off to a quick start in game two. They scored the first six runs before the Bombers began a comeback.

In the bottom of the seventh, freshmen Jennifer Biondi and Becca Salant hit back-to-back singles to lead off the inning. Biondi later scored on a ground out and Salant scored on an error.

The South Hill squad continues its season and looks to bounce back against Empire 8 opponent Elmira College at 1 p.m. Saturday in Elmira, N.Y.
