Men’s soccer: Blue and Gold post shutout in first win

The men’s soccer team picked up its first win of the season shutting out the Marywood University 1–0 in its final non-conference game.

Senior midfielder and co-captain Jeff Geyer, who led the team with six shots and three shots on goal, nearly scored for the Bombers in the 34th minute but Marywood senior goalkeeper Shane Quinn saved his shot.

The Bombers took their second lead of the season in the 55th minute after a corner kick. Sophomore back Ryan Norland, who had his first assist of the year and second career point, headed the ball across the goal to sophomore forward Max Grigri, who headed the ball past Quinn for his first goal of the season and second of his career.

Lightning in the area stopped play for more than an hour in the 72nd. The Pacers spent most of the second half pressing up to get the equalizer but for the second straight game, the Bombers finished the match with a clean sheet.

Bombers’ Head Coach Andy Byrne went with a goalie platoon, starting senior Justin Parlapiano in the first half and junior Evan Kirshner in the second half. Parlapiano made three saves on three shots on goal while Kirshner saved the only shot on goal he faced.

The South Hill squad improved to 1–3–3 on the season with the win. The Bombers’ next game is against Nazareth College at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Carp Wood Field.
