Men’s track and field: Bombers turn in championship times

The men’s outdoor track and field had a busy day Saturday, sending athletes to both Moravian College’s Coach P Open in Bethlehem, Pa. and Cornell University’s April Open in Ithaca, N.Y.

The Bombers won three events at Moravian, highlighted by senior and team co-captain Kyle Devins’ victory in the long jump. In addition to winning the event, Devins’ jump of 7.08 meters was also good enough to serve as an NCAA provisional qualifier.

Senior and co-captain Jeff Wetmore won the 200-meter dash in an Eastern College Athletic Conference-qualifying time of 22.12 seconds and finished just ahead of fellow senior and co-captain Max Orenstein, who also put in an ECAC-qualifying time in 22.13 seconds.

The Bombers’ other win at Moravian came in the 4×100-meter relay, where Wetmore, freshman Jake Willis, sophomore Chris Mastrosimone and Orenstein triumphed in an ECAC-qualifying time of 42.64 seconds.

The Bombers also qualified for the ECACs in the 4×400 meter relay, where freshman Brennan Edmonds, Mastrosimone, Wetmore and Orenstein finished second in 3:17.61.

Ithaca also received strong finishes from Orenstein, who finished second in the 100-meter dash in 11.12 seconds and Wetmore, who finished third in the same event in 11.13 seconds.

At Cornell, junior Jusan Hamilton finished third in the hammer throw at 45.53 meters. The Bombers also received strong performances from senior Paul Helm, who finished seventh in the shot put at 12.32 meters and sophomore Ian Kelley, who finished seventh in the discus at 40.28 meters.

The Bombers will resume competition at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Ithaca College/SUNY-Cortland Invitational in Cortland, N.Y.
