Men’s Track and Field: Bombers win fifth straight Empire 8 Outdoor title

The men’s outdoor track and field team won its fifth straight conference title Sunday at the Empire 8 Conference Championships in Rochester, N.Y. The Bombers scored a total of 230 points to finish 82 points ahead of host Rochester Institute of Technology.

Senior and team co-captain Kyle Devins had a standout day for the Bombers, winning the long jump with a mark of 7.11 meters and the triple jump with a leap of 13.60 meters. He broke his own Empire 8 conference records in both events. He also provisionally qualified for the National Collegiate Athletic Association Outdoor championships in the long jump and was named Track Athlete of the Meet.

Devins’ victories were just two of the nine individual events the Blue and Gold won at the meet. Senior and co-captain Max Orenstein was also a dual winner, capturing the 100-meter dash in an Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference championship qualifying time of 11.05 seconds, and the 200-meter dash in 23.23 seconds.

In addition to Devins and Orenstein, senior Brian Turnbull won the javelin throw with a hurl of 48.37 meters, senior Chris Stahlmann won the high jump with an ECAC-qualifying mark of 19.93 meters, senior co-captain John Davis won the 3000-meter steeplechase in 9:52.17 and graduate student William Way won the 5000-meter run in 15:43.71.

Sophomore David Geary was the only Ithaca underclassman to win an individual event, capturing the 1500-meter run in 4:05.02. The Bombers’ only relay victory came in the 4×400 meter relay, which they won in 3:35.48.

The Bombers’ next meet is the Cornell Upstate Challenge at 10 a.m. Saturday in Ithaca.
