Tennis teams compete at Hilton Head Tournament

The annual Hilton Head tournament on March 14–16 saw the women’s tennis team win two out of its three matches, while the men’s tennis team took one out of its three. The women defeated Shepherd University and Stockton University 7–2 and 5–4, respectively, but dropped its match to Georgetown College in Kentucky 1–8.  The men cruised to victory over Shepherd 8–1, but dropped their matches against Georgetown College in Kentucky and Baker University of Kansas 4–5 and 3–6 respectively.

Junior Haley Kusak, the Empire 8 Conference player of the year, was the most consistent Bomber on the women’s side, recording two wins in singles, which included a 6–0 6–0 blanking over sophomore Molly Lovern of Shepard and two wins in doubles. Kusak and freshman Caroline Dunn secured the only win against Georgetown in first doubles, winning 9–8 over sophomores Shae Henry and Natalie Fiepke, after winning the tiebreak 7–4.

Dunn would also record two wins in second singles, defeating freshman Alisha Adkins of Shepherd 6–2 6–1, and junior Gianna Letinski of Stockton 6–2 6–4.

On the men’s side, a bright spot for the Blue and Gold was senior Chris Hayes, who won all three of his matches in second singles, including a 6–1 6–1 victory over Shepherd sophomore Will Wheatley. Hayes would team up with freshman Michael Gardiner in second doubles to defeat Wheatley and senior Lewis Charette 8–0.

Junior Wes Davis would contribute three wins of his own. After dropping the first set 6–1, Webb would fight back and win the deciding set 10–4 over freshman Shane Dempsey of Shepard.

The women’s next match will be home against the University of Rochester at noon April 2 at the Wheeler tennis courts while the men will square off against the Hobart College statesmen at 4 p.m. March 24 in Geneva, New York.
