Women’s tennis: Bombers have strong showing at state championships

The women’s tennis team wrapped up the weekend with sophomore Cristina Nunez winning the New York State Division III Women’s Tennis Championship at Reis Tennis Center at Cornell University.

In the finals, Nunez defeated top-seeded Lia Weiner from University of Rochester 6–3, 6–1 to cap off the three-day tournament. With the victory, Nunez improved her singles record to 15–1 on the season. At the end of last season, Weiner was ranked 17th in singles, while Nunez was ranked 44th by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.

In the final day of the championships, the Bombers also had two doubles teams advance to the semifinals. Senior Melissa Nunez and Cristina Nunez competed in the first doubles and sophomore’s Allison Young and Laurel Salladay played in the third doubles. Both teams failed to advance to the finals.

The Bombers also won in the first round of the tournament. In singles play, senior Melanie Cohen won second singles, Young won fourth singles, junior Kelsey Harness won fifth singles and Salladay won sixth singles. Junior Becky Campbell and Cohen paired together to win at second doubles.

The Blue and Gold will finish their Empire 8 conference regular season at home Wednesday at 3 p.m. against Rochester Institute of Technology at the Ithaca College Tennis Courts. The team will also compete in the Empire 8 Championship Tournament on Friday at Reis Tennis Center.
