Women’s Tennis: Stevens snaps squad’s Empire 8 Conference win streak

The women’s tennis team dropped its first match of the season to Stevens Institute of Technology 6-3 this afternoon at the Stevens Tennis Courts in Hoboken, N.J. The Bombers’ loss ended the longest winning streak by any Empire 8 Conference team in any league-sponsored sport.

The Blue and Gold had won 57 consecutive dual matches in regular season and playoff action and had not lost against a conference opponent since October 2004.

Freshman Cary Siegal and senior Becky Campbell won 8-4 in second doubles. Siegal also earned a 6-3,6-1 win at second singles, and senior captain Kelsey Harness won 6-2,6-2 in sixth singles.

The first doubles team of sophomore Becky Guzzo and junior Allison Young lost its match 8-4 to freshman Jessica Bourque and sophomore Lisa Tessitore of Stevens.

The South Hill squad will play in the New York State Division III Tennis Championships this weekend at Mendon Racquet Club in Pittsford, N.Y.
