Despite having champions in six weight classes, the fifth-ranked wrestling team narrowly failed to retain the Eastern Collegiate Wrestling Conference Championship today in Brockport, N.Y. after it finished 1.5 points behind SUNY-Cortland.
Senior Seth Ecker recorded pins in each bout he was in to win his third career conference title in the 133-pound weight class. Graduate student Jeremy Stierly won his third straight title at 149 pounds, while senior Derek Brenon and graduate student Nick Sanko defended their titles at 157 and 165 pounds respectively.
Junior Jules Doliscar tied a school record with his 19th pin of the season en route to winning the conference title at 174 pounds. The man who owns the record, senior Matt Mahon, won his first career conference title at the heavyweight class.
Freshman Alex Gomez finished second at 141 pounds and will have to wait until Monday to find out if he will have a spot in the NCAA Championships on March 9 and 10 in La Crosse, Wis.
