‘e-Motion’ raises awareness for growing artificial intelligence use today

“e-Motion” will take stage at the 20th anniversary of the La MaMa Moves! Dance Festival, presented by Daniel Gwirtzman Dance Company, in New York City from April 18 to 20. Alongside Gwirtzman, performer and assistant professor in the Department of Theatre and Dance Performance, is Saviana Stănescu, playwright and associate professor and chair of the Department of Theatre Studies, whose script forms the conceptual backbone of the dance-theater duet.
The shifting focus on AI in education is not solely in higher education. According to a 2024 AIPRM report, 54% of grade school students use AI tools for schoolwork with around 60% of grade school teachers claiming to integrate it into their teaching plans. 

IC focuses on increased artificial intelligence initiatives for educational and departmental use

Throughout the 2024-25 academic year, Ithaca College has placed an increased focus on artificial intelligence initiatives and AI education across campus, with the Presidential Working Group on AI formulating recommendations and guidelines for the use and implementation of AI. They have been working on a plan of six deliverables, which will be presented to the Board of Trustees for approval in May. 
Luke Keller, professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy and member of Presidential Working Group on AI, said the working group had many discussions about how the college can be conscious of the environmental impact of AI and be able to recognize when AI use violates the college’s core values.

SGC was joined by Casey Kendall, deputy chief information officer and associate vice president of applications and infrastructure; and Jenna Lamb, coordinator for AI initiatives and senior IT project manager. Kendall is the chair and Lamb is the coordinator of the Presidential Working Group on AI — a team of two students, three faculty and seven staff — formed in July 2024 to recommend guidelines for the use of AI that aligns with the college’s Vision, Mission and Values statement to the president and her cabinet.

Artificial Intelligence has been around since the mid-20th century, but it's a technology that has garnered increased attention in the past few years. AI involves creating machines that can think and act like humans, with goals such as recognizing patterns, making decisions and forming judgments similar to human reasoning. From writing and art to photography and video production, AI is making a significant impact across various fields, becoming an integral part of our lives — a change I believe we must embrace.
The AI Exploratorium will teach students, faculty and staff about GenAI, a type of AI that uses machine learning models to generate new content or ideas.

Beginning September 2024, Ithaca College’s AI Exploratorium will open in Friends Hall 110 to provide students, staff and faculty with the knowledge and resources needed to navigate artificial intelligence in an academic setting.
Artificial Intelligence is an ongoing discussion on and off college campuses, as many colleges have yet to make an official statement surrounding the allowance or ban of the different programs.
