For nearly a century, Disney films have captured the hearts of children and adults alike through their animated retellings of classic fairy tales. Through an increase in acquisitions like Lucasfilm, Marvel Studios and National Geographic, Disney has expanded its empire to a variety of genres and projects.
First year student hosts Logan Thompson and Ethan Kaufman share their thoughts on the films premiering at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival and this week's top films at the Box Office.
“Percy Jackson and the Olympians” is the long-awaited television series adaptation of the book series written by Rick Riordan. It stars Walker Scobell as Percy Jackson himself, Leah Jeffries as Annabeth Chase and Aryan Simhadri as Grover Underwood, with guest appearances from the likes of Lin Manuel Miranda, Jessica Parker Kennedy and Adam Copeland. The first episode aired on Disney+ on Dec. 19, 2023 with the finale airing on Jan. 30.
It’s quite clear that Marvel is on a downward turn with the screenplay element of their productions, with “The Marvels” standing as clear evidence. Acting chemistry and dynamics, while important, cannot be the focal point of any film, and the low box office results in the tens of millions will prove this sentiment correct in time.
