Commentary: Public safety resources at the college must be increased

Functional public safety resources are crucial to creating an appealing and safe college campus. Being a journalism student at Ithaca College has given me unique insight into college operations; I have consistently found the state of public safety resources to be insufficient and concerning.

On March 31, the Ithaca College Women’s Mentoring Network honored four women leaders during the 2023 Women of Distinction Award ceremony.

The Ithaca College Student Governance Council met Feb. 20 to hold a bill writing workshop where members discuss ideas and progress updates for bills.
According to a Public Safety Alert sent via email to the college community Nov. 4, the three swastikas are being investigated as vandalism of property and possible hate crimes. 

UPDATE: Three more swastikas found in Whalen Center

Three swastikas were reported in the James J. Whalen Center for Music on Nov. 4, raising the number of swastikas found on the Ithaca College campus in 2022 to eight.
The two most recent swastikas reported at Ithaca College were found in the Baker elevator and outside of a Kosher Kitchen storage room near Terrace Dining Hall. Tyler Wagenet, physical security systems engineer in the Office of Information Security and Access Management, said via email that there are no security cameras in any location where swastikas have been found.

Following recent incidents involving Ithaca College students in Downtown Ithaca, Dean of Students Bonnie Prunty and Bill Kerry, executive director of the Office of Public Safety and Emergency Management, are reminding students to be safe and aware of their surroundings.

Dean of Students Bonnie Prunty and Bill Kerry, executive director of the Office of Public Safety and Emergency Management, are reminding students to be safe and aware of their surroundings.
In reaction to four reports of drug-laced drinks and one report of sexual assault at events hosted by Cornell University fraternities, Cornell has suspended all fraternity parties and social events. The Ithaca Police Department and the Cornell University Police Department are currently investigating both reports.
