Building a legacy: The role of women leaders in NCAA growth

As of the 2024–25 academic year, there are 425 colleges and universities that fall under the NCAA’s Division III for athletics. Among those schools, 147 have female directors of athletics, which represents the highest ratio across every division in the NCAA.

On Sept. 14, also known as National Field Hockey Day, spectators were given the gift of a top-20 matchup, and that matchup did not disappoint. The No. 17 Ithaca College Field Hockey team took down the No. 9 team in Division III, York College, with just one lethal penalty corner to start the game — and end it — at 1-0.

Field Hockey squeezes by Cougars with 1-0 victory

On Sept. 4, the Ithaca College field hockey team maintained its perfect record. The Bombers extended their record to 3-0 with a 1-0 victory over the previously undefeated Misericordia University Cougars in a gritty non-conference matchup.

In its Fall 2024 home opener, the Ithaca College field hockey team earned a 3-1 victory over the St. John Fisher Cardinals on Sept. 1. The win improves the Bombers’ record to 2-0 overall.

When the 2024 season opened, the No. 23 Ithaca College field hockey team wasted no time setting the standard.
The Polar Plunge, an annual event that fundraises for Special Olympic New York, was hosted on March 23 by the Student-Athlete Advisory Council. Volunteers that raised over $25 line up to take the plunge in freezing conditions.

Field hockey advances to conference championship with win over Vassar

After a 2–1 victory Oct. 22 in Poughkeepsie, the Ithaca College field hockey team rematched the Vassar College Brewers in the Liberty League semifinal game on Nov. 3 at Higgins Stadium. The Bombers expanded on their previous one-point advantage, besting the Brewers in a dominant, 3–0, showing.
During the 2023 regular season, the Ithaca College field hockey team boasted a perfect, 4–0, record in overtime play. The Bombers earned post-regulation victories over the University of Scranton, Skidmore College, SUNY New Paltz, and the University of Rochester.

The 1–0 victory over the University of Rochester improved the team’s post-regulation record to a perfect 4–0; the first time the team has ever gone undefeated during extra time in program history.

Field hockey raises awareness through dedication game tradition

For the past two years, the team has chosen three games each season to dedicate to a charitable cause — whether it be athlete mental health, chronic illness or equity and inclusion. This season, the team showed its support for the KyleCares Foundation on Sept. 13, LGBTQ Pride on Sept. 27 and multiple sclerosis research on Oct. 7. 
Junior Juliana Valli is a striker on the field hockey team and a physical therapy major in the School of Health Sciences and Human Performance. Valli is one of 13 health science majors on her team.
