Mpox concerns decrease, resources still available to community

Ithaca College added resources for students to mitigate the spread of the mpox virus in summer 2022, but as case numbers have fallen, some students’ concern for the virus has decreased.

College to offer monkeypox vaccine at Hammond Health Center

Ithaca College will be offering monkeypox vaccines in the Hammond Health Center for students beginning Oct. 31, according to an email sent to the campus community Oct. 25.
Boothroyd Hall will continue to serve as an isolation housing space for residential students for the rest of the fall semester. It will also continue to offer free COVID-19 testing. However, Samm Swarts, assistant director for Emergency Preparedness and Response, said that if COVID-19 cases rise and there is no space in Boothroyd, the college will allow students to isolate in their assigned residence hall rooms.

County health department offers vaccine clinic for monkeypox

The Tompkins County Health Department s holding a monkeypox vaccination clinic from 1 to 4 p.m. Sept. 22. 
The CDC is calling the spread of monkeypox an outbreak because of the increase in case numbers above what is normally expected. In a 2003 monkeypox outbreak, 47 cases were reported within the U.S., which was the first time human cases of monkeypox were found outside of Africa. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services declared monkeypox a national health emergency Aug. 4.
