Media shrouds citizen protest

By Chris Zivalich October 12, 2011
Few news networks have extensively covered the ongoing Occupy Wall Street protests, with perhaps the ironic exception of FOX News, which featured Anne Coulter calling them a product of “mob mentality.” Sean Hannity even said the protestors “really don’t like freedom.”

Commentary: DADT repeal risks distraction from anti-war efforts

By Adam Polaski October 12, 2011
Last month, “don’t ask, don’t tell,” the policy that banned gays and lesbians from serving openly in the U.S. military, was officially repealed. Liberals everywhere applauded the decision, cheering for the death of the discriminatory measure that had been a focal point for the Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender rights movement for more than a year.

More than a decade ago, a committee of Ithaca College faculty and administrators recommended creating the Center for the Study of Culture, Race, and Ethnicity with the dual mission of developing a curriculum focused on African, Latino/a, Native American and Asian people, and promoting racial awareness and diversity on campus through extra-curricular programming.

College athlete model is flawed

By Matthew Carolan, grad student October 5, 2011
Athletes dedicate 20 to 40 hours per week to sports. In return, they receive a scholarship, which is up for yearly renewal at the coach’s behest. This absolutely binds athletes for fear that their aid might be dropped — even though coaches can and have backed out of contracts for opportunities at better schools, without…

So far, society has come a long way in determining how we function and what we need in order to sustain ourselves. However, we constantly undergo massive change. Consequently, we’re continually fed false claims on what we need to…

Commentary: College should protect its lands with fracking ban

By Kaela Bamberger October 5, 2011
Last November, I was nearly done with the first semester of my freshman year when I stumbled upon a film screening that changed my life. The audience, comprised of college students and local residents, formed a sense of community as the collective groans, shouts and outrage grew the more we learned about hydraulic fracturing. Following…

Editorial: Student force builds brands

By The Ithacan October 5, 2011
Since college students live in their own campus bubbles, corporations have struggled to target the younger demographic — until recently. A little peer pressure may just do the trick.

Commentary: Vampire appliances drain energy when powered off

By Joseph Laquatra September 28, 2011
Most American homes have almost two-dozen “vampire” appliances that consume energy daily — even when they are turned off. These appliances, which are not really off, but in standby mode, cost more than $1 billion per year in energy expenses. They continuously use power so their features still work when switched off, With vampire appliances…

Commentary: Colleges should not pay student athletes to play

By Brittany Lange September 28, 2011
The first time I learned of the debate over paying college athletes, I was utterly shocked. The idea that colleges and universities would pay a salary to student athletes seemed so absurd I was surprised it was even a disputable issue. Little did I know, it has been drifting around sport authorities and colleges for…
