Ithaca College students and alumni are expressing frustration on social media after an unaffiliated fraternity at Ithaca College sent out a Facebook invitation Oct. 9 for a party with what they are calling a racially charged theme.
Ithaca College students and faculty members are upset following the Blue Sky Reimagining Kick-Off event, which they are calling racist and exclusive. The kick-off has some faculty questioning the entire initiative.
In its guiding assumptions, the event appeared to dismiss and even disparage the idea that a rich and valuable undergraduate education is critically tied to what happens in the classroom, where close, diligent and serious attention to intellectual ideas, problems and texts are the central focus.
The dichotomy between the Ithaca College administration's response to an off-campus party and its own speaker panel showed that a “dedication to combating bigotry” only counts when the college does not directly have to deal with the consequences.
The Blue Sky Kickoff that happened on October 8, 2015, from 3-5pm in Emerson Suites was an exercise in exclusivity and privilege. At an institution that claims to have a commitment to excellence, the Blue Sky Reimagining event was antithetical to our mission.
On Oct. 26, 2013, between 12:30 a.m. and 1 a.m., Ithaca College students Jasmine and Jennifer Spearman got into a physical altercation with two Public Safety officers after the officers entered their Circle Apartment to investigate a noise complaint.
