Editorial: Collegiate athletes should be able to live the high life

While many states in the U.S. have legalized the recreational use of cannabis, college athletes are not allowed to consume it because of NCAA policy.
Binghamton-based businessman William Durham opened William Jane Dispensary, the first legal dispensary for people over 21 in Ithaca on March 16. While marijuana is decriminalized in New York, the college is still a federally funded campus, so students are not permitted to carry or use marijuana on campus.

Katie Newcomb, assistant director of the Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards, said the Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act (DFSCA) requires federally funded schools to not only comply with the federal illegalization of marijuana and other drugs but also to run a drug and alcohol abuse prevention program. 

Marijuana legalization will not affect campus policy

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed a bill legalizing recreational marijuana in New York state March 31, but not much will change for Ithaca College students.
Jake Brenner, assistant professor in the Department of Environmental Studies and Science at Ithaca College, studied the potentially detrimental effects of Marijuanna farming in California, the state with the largest, and now legal, production of the plant.
