Track and Field teams dominate Empire 8 Championship

The Ithaca College men’s and women’s track and field teams traveled to Houghton College for the Empire 8 Conference Outdoor Championships on April 23. The women’s team finished first overall to capture the program’s 12th title, and the men’s team placed second, falling only to Utica College.

The women’s team finished the day with 282.5 points, more than 200 points over second place Utica College. At the end of the day, the women’s team finished first in 11 individual and relay events.

Junior Brandy Smith dominated the competition in the shot put, discus and hammer throw. She placed first in all three events, measuring 12.60 meters in the shot put, 46.53 meters in the hammer throw and 41.12 meters in the discus.

Junior Yvonne Palacios followed Smith in the discus, finishing second with a distance of 37.65 meters, and sophomore Charis Lu took fourth in the discus with 36.77 meters and finished second in the shot put with a distance of 11.37 meters.

Sophomore Taryn Cordani took first in the 1,500-meter run with a time 4:37.94, breaking her previous meet record of 4:40.44. Both Cordani and Smith were named the athletes of the meet.

The Bombers claimed the first, second and fourth spots in the pole vault. Junior Katherine Pitman took first in the event with a height of 3.81 meters, breaking the meet record. Senior Alex Rechen finished in second at 3.20 meters, and junior Amanda Zaput claimed fourth at 2.90 meters.

Senior Eliza Dewart finished first in the 400-meter dash with 58.65 seconds, while senior Sarah Werner and freshman Lusmer Quintana took the top two spots in the 100-meter dash with times of 12.51 seconds and 12.63 seconds, respectively.

Sophomore Sierra Grazia claimed the 800-meter run title with a time of 2:18.66 and freshman Britney Swartout beat out the competition for first in the 400-meter hurdles, finishing in 1:07.25.

Dewart, senior Lizzi Dowling, Quintana and Werner finished first in the 4×100-meter relay in 49.64 seconds.

The Bombers also claimed the the top three spots in the javelin. Junior Francesca Boylan won the event with a throw of 35.86 meters. Freshman Cortlyn Raynes threw for 34.40 meters, locking her in second place, while senior Kristen Pompey finished third with a distance of 31.48 meters. Boylan also finished third in the shot put with a distance of 11.04 meters.

The Bombers claimed three of the top six finishes in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Junior Kristin Lynn claimed third at 11:32.33, senior Michaela Cioffredi took fourth at 11:36.38 and freshman Emilie Mertz placed fifth in 11:55.86.

The men’s side finished second overall at the meet, tallying 114 points.

Seniors Aaron Matthias and Jordan Smith both had successful 100-meter dash races, finishing second and fourth, respectively. Matthias finished in 10.96 seconds and Smith followed with a time of 11.21 seconds.

The 4×100-meter relay team of freshman Jacob Dombek, junior Roosevelt Lee, Matthias and Smith finished third in 42.64 seconds.

Matthias also finished fourth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.40 seconds and finished fifth in the long jump with a mark of 6.31 meters.

Senior Andrew Brandt finished second in the high jump with a height of 2.03 meters, and junior Laurence Cass took second in the hammer throw at 52.18 seconds.

Junior Sean Phillips, seniors Brendan Davis and Larkin Bohanan claimed third, fourth and fifth in the 1,500-meter run. Phillips topped off the Bombers with a time of 4:06.07, Davis finished at 4:06.69 and Bohanan claimed 4:08.96.

Freshman Alex Arika shined in the triple jump, placing third with a 12.90 mark, while Lee took fifth at 12.51 meters and freshman Kyle Davis finished sixth at 12.41 meters.

The Bombers will host the Ithaca Quad at 3 p.m. April 26 at 3:30 pm at Butterfield Stadium.
