The Ithaca College women’s basketball team continued its strong play in the second half of the season with a 58–41 win over St. John Fisher College on Jan. 28. The Bombers continue a four–game win streak, improving to 15–3 overall and 7–2 in conference play.

Throughout the contest, the Blue and Gold maintained hold of the lead, the largest being 20 points in the third and fourth quarters. The win over the Cardinals was secured by forcing turnovers and playing good defense.

Junior Julie Yacovoni came out strong, scoring seven of the Bombers 16 first quarter points. Yacovoni led the Blue and Gold in scoring with 13 points and contributing four rebounds and three assists.

“Once one person hits shots, the more likely everyone else is going to be confident to take shots and make them,” Yacovoni said.

Also contributing to the Bombers success over St. John Fisher was junior Jordan Beers with 11 points and six rebounds and senior Erin Ferguson with nine points and five rebounds.

Defense was key for the Bombers throughout the contest, as they scored 18 points off of 27 forced turnovers.

“We really focus on one game at a time,” Beers said. “We had great energy from the beginning and it carried out on the defensive end.”

The Blue and Gold opened the second half with possession and went on a 7–0 run ignited by a steal by Ferguson.

Unforced errors were a burden for the South Hill squad throughout the third quarter, adding up to a total of 26 for the evening. Head coach Dan Raymond said turnovers are something the team needs to be more aware of.

Hanging their hat on defense, Raymond hopes that, with continued strong play, they can continue competing well in games.

“If we can play defense like we did today, it’s always going to keep us in a game, and eventually someone is going to make a big play for us,” Raymond said.

The Bombers look to extend their win streak to five as they travel to Empire 8 Conference opponent Nazareth College at 6 p.m. Jan. 31 in Rochester, New York.
