I am sure by now you have heard about the horrible oil spill that happened in the Gulf of Mexico and things continue to get more interesting. For those who haven’t, on APril 20 there was a massive explosion of a Deepwater Horizon oil rig off the coast of Louisiana. Not only did the rig sink, but oil spread out into the ocean. Not a pretty site. Some are really nervous that if it does actually reach the coast, it will disrupt tourism and fishing industries and seriously harm some habitats. The ones being held responsible for it…BP. Yes, my friends British Petroleum. All the costs of the spill and operations to clean it up are on BP, while the government makes sure that the people on the coast are not affected. In his address on April 30, right before addressing the economy, Obama did make a statement that I was not too pleased to hear, “So, let me be clear. I continue to believe that domestic oil production is an important part of our over all strategy for energy security.” O. Right. Well, that’s not quite I had in mind for what Obama would utter, but alas, so it is.
I continued looking around at all of the coverage of the explosion and oil spill and actually came across Hardball with Chris Matthews talking about it. I was even more excited to find that the person he was talkin with was non other than Kate Sheppard, the environmental reporter for Mother Jones magazine and an alum of Ithaca College. Check out here what she had to say!
