An assignment for a class I’m taking involved “identifying and explaining two cultures you belong to.” Easy enough, I thought.
Wrong.
I started by thinking about how I would describe myself. I came up with the following:
- I get all my news from “SNL Weekly Update” and “The Daily Show.”
- “Sex and the City” and Cosmopolitan magazine have influenced the way I view sex and female’s relationship with it.
- I don’t have a religion and was not raised in a religious house.
- Television rules the way I think about everything and how I view the world.
- I like trees.
Other than seeming completely superficial based on my list, I realized that few of these worked. The definition of “culture” as defined in my class as having to do with histories of communications passed down and how they affect people. Everything I watch is from my generation. Granted there were six seasons of “Sex and the City,” but I don’t think that counts.
All I know is that when I finally pull this together, I’m sure it’ll still come out wildly different than everyone else’s assignments. It’s an interesting idea though, to write about how the culture you identify with uses communications to pass information.
