As much as I love sports, I tend to confine myself to actively following only a couple of sports. I’m a strong football fan, an absolute ice hockey nut, I follow baseball and basketball and I don’t go too far beyond that. So one of my New Year’s resolutions is to be a bit more broad in my sports tastes this coming year.
It’ll certainly be easier, what with me spending next semester in London. Soccer, cricket, rugby…the sporting climate is fairly different in the UK and Europe. Even the auto racing is different, with Formula 1 far outstripping NASCAR, the IRL or the NHRA in terms of popularity. I suppose it’ll be a little disappointing not being able to watch as much, if any, NHL hockey while I’m gone but the exciting English Premier League and Champions League socc-excuse me, “football” action should more than make up for that. Who knows, I might walk away from one of these quintessentially British sports a fan for life the way I did when I first began watching ice hockey during the NHL’s first season back from its 2004-2005 lockout.
