The defenses of the women’s soccer team and the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire had held each other scoreless for 80 minutes of play. It was only natural that last year’s Empire 8 Conference defensive player of the year was the one to break the deadlock.
A Blugolds foul in the 81st minute set up a free kick for junior forward Anna Gray, who delivered with a rocket shot that found its way into the back of the net to put the Bombers ahead 1-0. That was all they needed to hold onto victory.
Senior goalie Becca Salant recorded her first shutout of the season by stopping all six shots she faced. Graduate student Megan Trager also made her first appearance since the 2010 season. She had two shots, with one of them on goal.
The Blue and Gold face Babson College at 1:30 p.m. Saturday as they continue their play in the Heron Cup at Hobart and William Smith College in Geneva, N.Y.
