Three Ithaca Police Department officers were injured while pursuing a vehicle that was reported stolen from the parking lot of the Hess gas station on Elmira Road on Thursday.

The IPD responded to a call from the gas station at 12:23 p.m. and later spotted the vehicle traveling through the city, according to an IPD press release. The officers had attempted to stop the vehicle but the operator had refused to pull over. The vehicle, which was traveling at a high rate of speed, had struck an unmarked IPD vehicle, injuring three occupants.

The suspect abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene on foot. During a ground search, the suspect, now identified as David Manzi, 53, was found near a ground complex. The IPD vehicle suffered extensive damage in the incident and was later towed from the scene.

The officers were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of neck pain and back pain. Jamie Williamson, public information officer at the IPD, said the three injured officers are recovering.

“Those officers are on the road to recovery,” he said. “Their injuries are minor but nonetheless, anytime a police officer is injured while on duty, it is a serious concern for us.”

Manzi, a resident of Syracuse, has been held for booking an arraignment. The IPD has not released details of the exact charges.
