The women’s soccer team defeated No. 15 Rochester Institute of Technology 2–1 on Oct. 11 in Rochester, New York. The victory improves the Bombers’ overall record to 7–3–1 on the season.
The Bombers opened up the scoring early in the match in the seventh minute with an unassisted long shot by junior forward Holly Niemiec from the top of the box over the goalie’s head. Both teams had numerous offensive opportunities coming from corner kicks and shots, but neither the Bombers nor the Tigers were able to capitalize again in the first half.
RIT found the back of the net in the 56th minute of the competition, which tied the game at 1–1. Senior midfielder Elizabeth May received a through ball from teammate Maxine Culhane and launched it into the right corner of the goal.
Niemiec answered late in the second half with yet another unassisted long shot in the 88th minute to lift the Bombers 2–1 over the Tigers. The goal was allowed due to a miscommunication among the Tiger’s defense. The goal was Niemiec’s fifth of the season.
Defensively, senior goalkeeper Beth Coppolecchia played a strong game in the net for the Bombers with six saves. RIT split the game in half in net between goalies Kelly Rogers and Sienna Fisher. The two combined for three saves and allowed one goal apiece.
The Bombers’ next competition will be against the SUNY Oneonta Red Dragons at 4 p.m. Oct. 13 in Oneonta, New York.
