The women’s track and field team took first place in the New York State Collegiate Track Conference for the eighth consecutive year May 6 and 7. The men’s team took fourth place.
The women earned 195.5 points in 22 scoring events, 10 more points than second place University of Rochester. The men accumulated 119 points at the meet which was held at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York.
For the women, freshman Lusmer Quintana completed the 100-meter dash in 12.55 seconds, which was good for a second place finish. Sophomore Sierra Grazia took fourth in the 800-meter run. Her time of 2:17.42 was less than four seconds behind the first place finisher.
Sophomore Taryn Cordani had two standout performances in the meet, competing in the 1500-meter and 5000-meter runs. Cordani placed sixth with a time of 4:42.12 and second with a time of 17:33.84 respectively. Placing Sophomore Denise Ibarra placed second in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11:02.59.
On the field, junior Katherine Pitman broke her personal record in pole vault. She won the event with a 4.18-meter vault. Senior teammate Alex Rechen took second with 3.50 meters. Junior Brandy Smith took first in discus with a throw of 49.54 meters.
For the men’s squad, senior Aaron Matthias claimed third in the 100- and 200-meter dashes, crossing the finish line at 10.99 and 21.78 respectively. In the 1500-meter run, junior Sean Phillips took third and senior Brendan Davis took seventh.
In the 10,000-meter run, sophomore Tim Chappell earned second, completing the event in 31:47.56. Senior Sawyer Hitchcock won the 3000-meter steeplechase in 9:19.92. Close behind was senior Stephen Gomez coming in fourth.
Senior Andrew Brandt took home second place in high jump, reaching 1.98 meters. Junior Larry Cass III earned fourth in hammer throw, reaching 53.49 meters.
Both squads will be back in action 3 p.m. May 14 at the St. John Fisher Final Qualifiers in Rochester, New York.
