The baseball team wrapped up its spring break trip yesterday in California with a 5–3 record, giving the Bombers their best start since 2006.
The Blue and Gold kicked off their season with an 8–3 win over No. 18 California Lutheran University on Mar. 8, marking the second consecutive season opening win for the Bombers over the Kingsmen.
Junior T.J. Abone led the team going 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a run scored. Senior Matt Samela and sophomore Matt Streich also drove in two runs each for the Bombers.
Despite being out hit 9–8, the South Hill squad was able to capitalize on the Kingsmens’ four errors.
In the following game, the Bombers did not fair as well as they fell 10–6 to Pomona-Pitzer College on Monday.
The Blue and Gold jumped out to a 4–0 lead, but the Sagehens scored a pair of runs in the second and the fifth then capitalized with five runs in the sixth inning. Freshman Brian Eggleston made his collegiate debut out of the bullpen going 2 2/3 innings without allowing a run.
The Bombers jumped back in their third game as sophomore Aaron Sapp threw a complete game shut out to defeat Occidental College on Tuesday in his first career start.
Unable to keep a win streak alive, the South Hill squad fell to No. 11 Chapman University 5–2 on Wednesday. Junior Tom Fishback went seven innings allowing only two runs with three strikeouts.
But the Blue and Gold made yet another turnaround as they topped Claremont-Mudd-Scripps College 13–2 on Friday. Senior Pete MacDaniel threw a complete game allowing just one earned run on seven hits.
The Bombers put together their first win streak of the season as they defeated Whittier College 6–4 on Saturday. Streich hit a three-run home run in the first as part of a four-run inning.
The Blue and Gold dropped their second game to Pomona-Pitzer yesterday, losing by a score of 12–3. Sophomore David Ahonen went 2-for-2 with a home run and two RBIs.
The Bombers finished out their trip on a high note as they defeated Menlo College 12–3 in their second game yesterday. Sophomore Rob Zappia led the Bombers with a career-high five RBIs on the day.
The South Hill squad returns to action at 3:30 p.m. Friday as they take on Gettysburg College in Gettysburg, Pa.
