A six-goal third quarter was enough to give the men’s lacrosse team (11—4 overall, 6—0 Empire 8) a 15-6 win against the Elmira College Soaring Eagles (3—9 overall, 0 Empire 8) today in Elmira, N.Y.
Six different Bombers scored in the third quarter to break open a game that had been tied at five at halftime. Sophomore attack Pat Slawta recorded four of his career-high six points in that span. Freshman midfielder Steve Danlyshyn scored at 1:16 of the third quarter and led all scorers with three goals. The South Hill squad was without senior Tom Mongelli, the team’s leading scorer, who was sidelined due to illness.
Sophomore midfielder Dustin Gatt recorded three points to lead the Soaring Eagles and senior attack Rick Acorn scored twice for Elmira.
The Blue and Gold will return to Higgins Stadium at noon this Saturday for an Empire 8 title-deciding matchup against No. 10 Stevens Institute of Technology (13-2, 5-1). The winner will be assured the top seed in the Empire 8 Conference tournament. Regardless of the result, the Bombers will host an Empire 8 semifinal next Wednesday.
