A porch on 132 University Ave. by Cornell University caught on fire early this morning, but crews were able to quickly extinguish its flames, according to a press release penned by Daniel Tier III, assistant fire chief of the Ithaca Fire Department.
A passing motorist first noticed the fire around 7:13 a.m. and alerted the IFD while the vehicle’s passenger notified house residents, the release said.
According to the release, an Ithaca Police Department officer first responded to the scene, using a dry chemical extinguisher to hamper the fire’s progress as the IFD arrived. Fire crews, the release said, were then able to dismantle parts of the porch to access the fire, which was extinguished within 10 minutes. All occupants were allowed back into the house by 8:15 a.m., the release said.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the IFD, according to the release.
