Last season’s 2-1 loss to Keuka College was fresh in the minds of the softball team today as they defeated the Storm with 5-1 and 14-0 victories in Keuka Park, N.Y.

Though it was their first season with less than 30 wins since 2009, the Blue and Gold finished the regular season winning 20 of their last 21 games.

Sophomore pitchers Sam Bender and Jillian Olmstead held the Storm to just one hit and one run combined in Game 1. Bender pitched through five innings while Olmstead collected the final six outs.

The Bomber’s offense struck early in the first, scoring two runs on junior infielder Jen Biondi’s two-run double. Biondi finished with five hits and four RBI in both games combined. Keuka responded with a run on a wild pitch from Bender, making it a one-run game. The Bombers’ offense added some insurance with a two-run double from sophomore catcher and third baseman Sydney Folk. Freshmen catcher Monica Capalongo’s sacrifice fly opened up a four-run lead for the Bombers.

The second game did not add as much late-inning excitement, as the South Hill squad took full control early and often, scoring 12 runs in the first three innings.

A wild pitch followed Biondi’s RBI single to give the Bomber’s their first two runs, and Capolongo added an RBI as part of a 5-run first inning. Biondi and Folk were both a perfect 3-for-3 in Game 2 of the doubleheader. The Bombers collected a total of 14 hits in the game, defeating the Storm in just five innings of play.

Bender and Olmstead pitched four scoreless innings combined, and freshman Eve Brown made her third appearance of the season and pitched a perfect fifth inning.

The South Hill squad begins postseason with a game against the Alfred University Saxons at noon Friday on Kostrinsky Field.
