1. Media policy expert Robert McChesney will speak about corporate dominance of the media at 7:30 p.m. in Park Auditorium. McChesney will discuss themes from his recent books, “Digital Disconnect: How Capitalism Is Turning the Internet Away from Democracy” and “Dollarocracy: How the Money-and-Media-Election Complex Is Destroying America.” Check out our recent Q&A with McChesney.
2. Gary Sforzo, professor of exercise and sport sciences, recently published a paper titled “The Study of Health Coaching,” in the international journal “Global Advances in Health and Medicine.” The paper discusses health and wellness coaching as an important accompaniment to medical and preventative treatment. Health coaching is available to Ithaca College employees through the Mind, Body, Me campus wellness initiative.
3. In the first public meeting of a series about the City of Ithaca’s proposed budget for 2014, Mayor Svante Myrick blasted Cornell University for not contributing enough money to the city budget. Cornell does not pay property taxes and is expected to contribute $1.25 million to the city in the upcoming year. Myrick said it is shameful that the the university is expected to contribute $1.25 million when the 2014 proposed city budget is expected to be $65 million.

1. William Brogan III, ’07, is speaking at 4 p.m. in the Center for Natural Sciences 112. Brogan’s presentation is titled “Safe and Submerged: How Aquatic Plants Buffer Freshwater Communities from Contaminants.”
2. The Student Activities Board is holding a film screening of “This is the End” at 8 p.m. in Textor 102.
3. The Ithaca College Symphonic Band is holding a concert at 8:15 p.m. in Ford Hall. Conducted by Elizabeth Peterson, the concert will also be streamed online.

News: The White House ordered a government shutdown minutes before midnight on Tuesday and government workers have been furloughed for the second consecutive day. Congressman Tom Reed, R-N.Y. — House representative for the 23rd Congressional District of New York, including Tompkins County — was in favor of the shutdown, which is the first one in 17 years.
Sports: As performance-enhancing drug use gains more media attention in professional sport, many NCAA Division III institutions are supplementing the association’s standard for drug testing among their student-athletes. Currently, Ithaca College, along with other Division III schools, does not require institutional drug testing for athletes.
Accent: Get ready for bushels of fun, Ithaca! The 31st Annual Downtown Ithaca Apple Harvest Festival is this weekend, Oct. 4–6. Apple Fest will be held near The Commons on State Street, South Cayuga Street and North Aurora Street because of the construction on The Commons.
